THE JOURNEY TOGETHER

Forty-five years ago today, my then boyfriend/now husband asked me to “go with him” while we were out on our third date. I was only seventeen at the time, still a bit shy, but sure I knew I liked him more than anyone I had dated, so I said yes. (The actual term back in the day was “going steady”.) He seemed happy with my reply and then he gave me his class ring to wear. It was gold with an emerald stone, strikingly beautiful, and I thought it weighted about a ton at the time. But I wore it proudly around my neck on a chain, as was the custom. We were married 3 years later.

Fast forward to the present: As we both crawled out of bed this very chilly, frosty morning and headed for the coffee pot, I recalled that evening forty-five years ago, when he asked me to go with him. (We both always remember January 24th as a special Anniversary date.) Thinking out loud, I asked him, “So, where are we going?” He was a bit confused until I reminded him that he asked me to “go with him” way back then – his exact words. He laughed and said that he didn’t really know where he was going, he just knew he wanted us to go together.

We are still going, still unsure where, but pretty sure we’ll get there together!

As he commented several anniversaries ago, he's pretty sure this thing will probably work out. Tongue in cheek here.
