The Livestock Guardian Dog

Biscuit on the Farm

Every farm needs a good guardian. Biscuit is ours. She is a Great Pyrenees and they are bred to protect. She protects the chickens, goats, cows and kids (people). She is a little over 3 years old and already has been a great asset to us.  She is also our family dog that all the kids look up to, love and respect.

Just for information:  You don't have to train a guardian dog to protect. This is a natural instinct. When they are pups, you do have to train them to be obedient and follow normal comands and rules of the farm. Being the patient, gentle and affectionate creature that they naturally are gifted with, they can still be stubborn and independent at times while in the puppy stage. It's very important at this age (until around 18 months) to work with them consistantly so they understand commands and not get into trouble chasing animals, etc.

The Pyrenees can be difficult to handle and train but at the same time they are very eager to please their people (family) and always, always ready to guard and protect their charge.  It's important that the Pyrenees has a job to do, wherever he or she lives. Otherwise, they have no purpose and no one knows this better than they do. In most cases, they wouldn't do well in an apartment or house, nor in a small fenced in yard without a companion animal to protect.

Too many guardian dogs are adopted or purchased for the purpose of their looks and gentleness, and then they soon become unwanted members of the family. Too many end up at the local pound or are simply left to wonder away or get stolen because they are no longer "cute". It's always best to research and study this breed before buying one. They need a fenced in area, the larger the better, and animals to protect. This is their job and when they are happiest.

Here on our farm, we occasionally have puppies for sale to an approved farm or home, that is, puppies for guardian purposes.
