A STABLE FOR THE DAIRY QUEENS

Our little herd of dairy does have become more like drama queens here on the Farm.

They let you know when things aren’t just quite right anymore or when they’ve had enough!

It was no surprise then that their normal accommodations of leaky, drafty hoop houses weren't keeping them happy any longer. They began to stay out in the rain on warm days, and mope around on cold days. Goats generally hate rain and being wet.

Building them a new stable has been on “the list” for several years, and it was time to get it done before winter. We commenced to drawing up plans, and then we traveled about an hour away to a cedar lumber company for most of the supplies.

It was finished just in time for the cold weather and I’m happy to report they have been warm and dry the past several months. So happy have they been, in fact, that it was quite a surprise to find them lying near it one recent clear night in the chilly air and moonlight. I guess they just wanted the option.

I have to say that it has been much easier on us, handy to have an indoor hay manger, and much nicer to look at than the various colored hoop houses of the past number of years!

The flip side is that sometimes it's a challange to look for eggs when a stray hen decides to use it for a nest. But that's what grandkids are for! -smile-

Here on the farm, we do what we can, when we can. It was definately time for this.
